Objectives:

The IT4CAD objective is to overcome the limitations of the traditional approach of surface modelling in the current 3D CAD systems introducing new methods and technologies that allow designers and engineers to quickly and intuitively transform an idea of shape into a geometrical model.

The main idea is to combine a geometric engine based on subdivision surfaces with a simple interactive technology that allows an easy design and editing of surfaces in traditional CAD systems.

IT4CAD, additionally, focuses on the strenghtening and improvement of the reverse engineering process, a necessary step for obtaining a digital model starting from an exhisting physical object, with a double objective. The first is the development of a new acquisition methodology aimed at simplifying and speeding up the reverse engineering process. The second is the definition of a new set of tools for surface reconstruction starting from 3D data acquired on the object, that build a geometrical model perfectly integrable with current CAD systems and functionalities.

The development of these new methods and technologies are supported in IT4CAD by the design, development and experimentation of new devices, interfaces and algorithms for enhanching the human computer interaction experience.

The IT4CAD project is subdivided into four working packages:

  • WP1: Geometric Engine
  • WP2: Shape Reconstruction
  • WP3: Fast Reverse Engineering
  • WP4: Interactive Technologies
